Kruschev allowed Korolev to send satellites into space as long as they did not interfere with the main mission. On October 4th, 1957, Korolev launched a satellite into orbit. The satellite (nicknamed Sputnik) caused a huge fallout (49). People all over the world could hear its beeping. Korolev may not be well remembered for it, but launching a satellite broke a major technological barrier; no one had ever sent an object into space to orbit the earth!  Krushchev wanted to keep the momentum going and asked Korolev to do something to celebrate the anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution (28). Korolev decided to launch a dog into space. Korolev was given only a few weeks to prepare the rocket and the attachment that would hold the dog(39)(29).
