After imprisonment
After Korolev was released from prison, he was sent into newly acquired German territory to investigate the German V-2 rockets which were used against the allies in the war. Korolev made a copy of the V-2 named the R-1 (35)(30). The R-2, larger than the R-1, was able to go further and carry a heavier payload (36). In 1946, Korolev was designated head of the special design bureau for the NII-88. In 1947, Korolev was promoted to chief designer.
