Korolev made adjustments to the R-7, developed an addition to the R-7 that safely allowed a cosmonaut to go into space, and named it Vostok (40). Vostok was used to launch small satellites into orbit, but the most memorable use of the Vostok was when it carried a man (Yuri Gagarin) into space on April 12th, 1961 (40). This was a major barrier that Koroloev had broken and would change the world forever.
